USA of Indiana's Concussion Management

Any athlete with a suspected concussion should be IMMEDIATELY REMOVED FROM PLAY, urgently assessed medically, should not be left alone, and closely monitored on the sideline for any worsening of signs or symptoms.  Any athlete who is suspected of sustaining a concussion or head injury in a practice or game shall be removed from play at the time of the injury; and may not return to play until the athlete has received a written clearance by a medical professional.  In short:  When in doubt, sit them out.

  2. Any athlete who has been removed from play due to concussion may not return to play until the athlete: is evaluated by a licensed health care provider trained in the evaluation and management of concussions and head injuries; and receives a written clearance to return to play from the health care provider who evaluated the athlete.

  4. TESTING/BASELINE: USA of Indiana Partner St. Vincent Sports Performance and Medicine is involved in concussion management and research for all athletes.  For neurocognitive testing, SVSP uses ImPACT  software with a long standing history and good research to back it.  It is considered the gold standard test.   There really are two testing times that need to be done. Creating a baseline test is crucial and is done in the off season.  USA of Indiana athletes receive FREE BASELINE TESTING as the expense of the baseline testing is covered by grants. This test normally costs $5 per baseline.   The second time for testing is after an injury occurs. This testing is done in the clinic and then the results can be compared to the baseline. This testing is charged to insurance (just like if the athlete suffered an ankle injury and they are seen for evaluation and an X-ray is ordered).  Families are generally responsible for a co-pay just like at any office visit.  USA of Indiana offers free concussion baseline testing at St. Vincent Sports Performance Center, West 86th & I465: If you are going to come in to get a baseline it is better to call to get a time.  It does not work well to do this as a walk-in.  Please call 317-415-5795 to get a good time.
